Welcome to the ACE English Box drills and exercises. These 15-minute lessons will develop spoken English fluency. You can choose either a song or pair work exercise at the end of each one.
There are two kinds of drills, one using picture cues (explained in Lesson One) and the other using spoken cues (explained in Lesson Two).
The drills start at an easy level and slowly increase in difficulty. Students proceed through the lessons, practicing and improving, quickly learning to self-correct. If students find a lesson difficult, the teacher should play the lesson segment or the whole lesson again. There is a menu on the left side of the screen that lets a teacher repeat an exercise or play songs or pair work separately.
Speaking out loud builds fluency. Students will start speaking from Lesson One. It’s alright for them to speak in unison since this encourages all students to participate, but they should speak in a normal speaking voice, not shout out the answers.
The teacher can adjust the speed of lessons according to students’ ability. A lesson can be repeated, and review lessons also combine material from the previous two lessons; or a teacher can choose to skip a review lesson if students have mastered the previous two lessons.
Start at the beginning. Even if a teacher has a more advanced class, we recommend beginning at Lesson One. Students can learn how the exercises work, get used to native speaker accents, and buildconfidence in speaking aloud. Once the teacher sees that students are having a little more difficulty, he/she can begin including the review lessons and repeating lessons if necessary.
Don’t focus on errors. With the ACE English Box, students learn by trying and by self-correcting. Making mistakes is a normal part of learning any language, so teachers should encourage students to try and should praise good attempts.
Choose songs or pair work (using the User Configuration link on the Main Menu). Pairwork exercises are short speaking exercises that students do with a partner. First, they’ll see the text on the screen that they will use in the pair work. Then they’ll watch a short video that models the question/answer exercise. Finally, they’ll see word cues on the screen that they can use to practice with a partner. Teachers should pair up students for this practice and then, if appropriate, ask them to change partners and continue practicing.
Songs are a great way to learn a language and are fun for students, so even if the lesson ends with pair work, they can enjoy the songs too!
Pair work gets students talking! In doing the pair work exercises, students start having ‘real’ conversations.
Shut down the ACE English Box safely after use.
1) Select the “Shut Down” button on the screen;
2) Wait a few seconds for the computer to shut down;
3) Wait until the small yellow light beside the red power light stops blinking before unplugging the unit or shutting off the power supply.
